Goldman and a carpenter worked on the idea but they found that the contraption kept collapsing at the least little thing. So instead he made them out of metal.

Goldman put ads in all the newspapers all week, announcing that a brand-new shopping convenience would be unveiled over the weekend. He didn't say what it was, the ads simply said "Can you imagine wending your way through a spacious food market without having to carry a cumbersome shopping basket on your arm? Every customer who visits our store this weekend will see the latest device conceived by the mind of man; and be able to shop with an ease never before known in any Food Store!"

Guess what happened? It was a flop. Nobody would use the new fangled contraptions. Mothers said they didn't want to push something like a baby carriage around and men said they wouldn't show they were weak by not carrying a basket. What to do?

Why he applied PSYCHOLOGY OF ADVERTISING to the problem!!!!!

To keep it short, he hired men and women in different age groups and had them push the carts around in the front of the store loaded with groceries. Then he put store clerks in the entrances telling people "look, everyone is using them; why not you?" The rest of the story you know.
